DISABILITY PROJECT WITH SUFFOLK NEW COLLEGEdisability-01.jpg
Following a successful trial during the summer The Suffolk Golf Partnership received £1000 from England Golf to help fund a further six sessions with students from the Suffolk New College.  Five sessions were held at Rushmere Sports Centre and one at Rushmere Golf Club.

Each session was attended by an average of 40 students aged between 16 and 21.  Tuition was provided by Alastair Spink, County Development Officer for the Golf Partnership and Kelvin Vince, Head Professional at Rushmere Golf Club. Learning Support Assistants were also available to provide students with additional help.

Using Tri-golf equipment students were divided into 3 groups and were able to experience playing golf in a fun environment with a variety of activities. As the sessions progressed students were encouraged to work together in smaller groups and as their skills developed activities became more competitive. At Rushmere Golf Club, students were able to use the main practice facilities with some receiving individual tuition using the club’s practice putting green.

Eleanor Tindall and Owen Clouting - WINNERS of the Ransomes Jacobsen Junior Golf Awards
Eleanor Tindall (14) and Owen Clouting (14) are the inaugural winners of the Ransomes Jacobsen Junior Golf Award organised by the Suffolk County Golf Partnership to recognise outstanding achievements by junior golfers in Suffolk over the past 12 months. Ransomes Jacobsen is a Textron Inc (NYSE:TXT) company.
The awards focus on those young people, who may not necessarily be the best junior golfers at their club, but who deserve special recognition for their all round contribution.
Colin Firmin, Chairman of the Suffolk County Golf Partnership, speaking at the award ceremony, held in brilliant sunshine on the three-hole golf course at the head office of sponsors, Ransomes Jacobsen, said,
“We were thrilled to receive an impressive number of nominations from clubs and organisations across the county. It was a considerable task for the selection panel to decide which girl and boy would be presented with an award, but Eleanor and Owen are truly outstanding recipients of the Ransomes Jacobsen award.”

ali.jpgALASTAIR SPINK APPOINTED COUNTY DEVELOPMENT OFFICER
Alastair Spink, one of Suffolk’s most respected professionals, has been appointed County Development Officer for the newly formed Suffolk Golf Partnership. His appointment followed a round of interviews held at Stowmarket last week.

Forty-three year old Spink represented Suffolk men’s county amateur team before becoming assistant to Stephen Whymark at Ipswich Golf Club. He spent two years employed at Fynn Valley Golf Club before an appointment at Hintlesham Hall where he was head professional, golf manager and director of golf over a period of 17 years. He left Hintlesham after a change of ownership and has since been attached to Robin Mann’s Felixstowe Golf Range where he will continue his coaching commitments. Spink will also continue as one of the Suffolk Golf Union junior academy coaches.

Spink starts the new job on February 1 and has agreed a 12-month contract on the basis of him working 15 hours a week on a fully flexible basis until January 31, 2010. Spink said: “I anticipate being incredibly busy with a priority to get to know people at Sport England, the English Golf Union and the English Women’s Golf Association. “I need to visit all the clubs in Suffolk as soon as possible to introduce myself. I have studied the Development Plan and am looking forward to the challenge.”

Colin Firmin, chair of the Suffolk Golf Partnership, Terry McEntee of Sport Suffolk and Steven Peet of EGU and EWGA formed the interviewing panel. Firmin said: “The interviewing process was quite demanding and, we believe, very thorough. In the end our decision was unanimous. We are convinced that, from a very strong field, we have appointed an exceptional candidate. “Alastair will be attending the Suffolk Partnership meeting at Halesworth on January 28 and will attend the County Golf Partnership conference at Woodhall Spa with me on February 24 and 25. I am sure Alastair will be a tremendous asset to the Partnership and will help us all to move Suffolk golf forward substantially.”
