Successes

sgp_letterhead_1.jpgTHE SUFFOLK GOLF PARTNERSHIP
Our first major success was simply to bring together the three bodies who organise and run golf in Suffolk. Achieving this means we are now able to work together in partnership with a structured plan and set goals to help 'grow the game' in the county. We know that golf has been played in Suffolk since the 19th Century and never before in this long history have Men, Ladies, and Professional Golfers formally united to develop the game. This is a great achievement which can only benefit the development of golf in Suffolk.

THE SGP WEBSITE
The Suffolk Golf Partnership (SGP) realised from the outset the importance of setting up an informative, well presented web site that could help create a link between the golfers and the respective bodies that are responsible for golf in Suffolk. The site would be a knowlegebase covering all aspects of Golf in Suffolk with its aim to Grow Golf In Suffolk. This website will be the SGP's main communication source so make sure to check it regularly for new information and updates.

THE SUFFOLK SHOW
The newly formed Suffolk Golf Partnership took a stand at the Suffolk Show in June 2008 and June 2009 to enable us to promote golf in Suffolk to a more diverse, possibly unreached market. The stand was extremely popular with a constant crowd and queue of youngsters waiting to have a go in our giant red inflatable golf net.  Some 9 PGA professionals gave up their time to give the boys and girls some tuition in the net. At the end of the 2 days we had seen around 300 juniors – a great effort!

The SGP would like to thank Suffolk Sport and the EGU/ EWGA for helping us to make the event such a success.

DISABILITY PROJECT WITH SUFFOLK NEW COLLEGE
F
ollowing a successful trial during the summer The Suffolk Golf Partnership received £1000 from England Golf to help fund a further six sessions with students from the Suffolk New College.  Five sessions were held at Rushmere Sports Centre and one at Rushmere Golf Club.

disability-01.jpgEach session was attended by an average of 40 students aged between 16 and 21.  Tuition was provided by Alastair Spink, County Development Officer for the Golf Partnership and Kelvin Vince, Head Professional at Rushmere Golf Club. Learning Support Assistants were also available to provide students with additional help.

Using Tri-golf equipment students were divided into 3 groups and were able to experience playing golf in a fun environment with a variety of activities. As the sessions progressed students were encouraged to work together in smaller groups and as their skills developed activities became more competitive. At Rushmere Golf Club, students were able to use the main practice facilities with some receiving individual tuition using the club’s practice putting green.

Rowan James, tutor at Suffolk New College was delighted with the response from the students. “The progression of my students ability has been fantastic. Those who at first struggled to hit the ball are now able to consistently hit balls into a range of targets. They particularly enjoy the large Velcro target”. He added “The whole experience has improved co-ordination, confidence and teamwork. For one particular student who often finds difficulty in attending college this project has given him the incentive to regularly participate”.
